Brézé Castle

A Castle with a Unique Sovereign Heritage

🏰 Founded on the lands of the Lords of Brézé (/breɪˈzeɪ/), just 10 km from Saumur (/soʊˈmʊər/), Brézé Castle invites you on a fascinating journey through the centuries—from the medieval period to the 20th century. 🏰

Château de Brézé

Centuries of Construction

First mentioned in a charter from the Abbey of Saint-Florent (/sæ̃ flɔːˈrɒ̃/) in 1063, Brézé Castle continued to evolve until 1959. The estate is made up of three main wings forming a central courtyard.

However, the castle is best known for its impressive dry moats and its troglodyte “underground castle.” Its moats, among the deepest in Europe at 18 meters, were originally created through the extraction of tuffeau stone. Over time, they formed a natural defence against enemy attacks. ⚔️

Beneath the foundations, a labyrinthine network of troglodyte passages immerses you in history! Initially built to escape Viking invasions, these underground rooms gradually evolved into real living spaces.

To explore Brézé Castle, tickets are available online on the official website or directly at the entrance of the estate.

🔖 Several visiting options are offered, with the possibility of exploring independently or with a passionate guide who will share the secrets and history of the castle.

The castle also offers special visits for families, with fun activities designed for children, making the experience even more engaging.

For history and architecture enthusiasts, a visit to the underground troglodyte passages is a must!
